What’s The Difference Between a Medium & a Psychic?

Many people still do not understand the distinction between what mediumship is, and what is psychic work. I will not be telling you that one is lesser than the other. Both have their place.

Mediums and psychics both use skills that are extended from the usual five senses.

Like:

  • Clairaudience for psychic hearing

  • Clairvoyance for psychic sight

  • Claircognizance for recognition or understanding

  • Clairsentience for psychic feeling

  • Clairgustance for smells, etc.

This means, all mediums are psychic but not all psychics are mediums.

The difference is a medium is getting their information from those in spirit.

How does a psychic work?

A psychic is getting information from a person’s auric field. The auric field contains all the information that a person has ever known or experienced. If a psychic wanted to connect to someone’s memory of their great aunt Edna, they could access that energy in the client’s aura.

They are not actually connecting with Edna herself.

This may be useful if you need to acknowledge an interaction you had with Edna as a child, or to look at family patterns to either promote or end.

Similarly, if you need to understand and pull to light something you are working on spiritually, the psychic skill set is totally appropriate.

How does a medium work?

A medium would perceive whoever is around you in spirit by using the same extended skillset a psychic would.  That may include your great aunt, parent, friend, former teacher, or even a family pet.

The people you love in spirit will make the choice to visit with you and have the medium translate. The spirit person will relay evidence so you, as the client, know who is speaking.

That also provides evidence of the continuation of life after death. The spirit-person may have come to share a memory, and have a nice visit, tell you about their experiences and who they are around on the side, acknowledge how they are still present for you including signs or symbols of how they wish to get your attention, what they see going on in your life, etc.

They want to communicate if they are still actively involved in your life and in what way. They might also want to give you guidance on a situation or help you resolve a relationship issue.

From my experience, our loved ones are not perfect or all-knowing just because they happen to be deceased. This means, don’t expect great aunt Edna to help you strategize on something she had no concept of in life unless she has come through to tell you she has been learning the material in spirit.

In a mediumship reading, there are times when future-based information will be brought up. It is not the same as fortune-telling. You are getting the best guess estimate of future events from your loved ones in spirit who know you and may be able to see an overview of a situation from being around you.

Remember: People do things differently.

As in any profession, people will do things differently. I want to respect the belief systems of people from different cultural and religious backgrounds than my own. I can only explain mediumship from my own perspective. I am a Spiritualist because the philosophy most closely aligns with what feels true to me.

Not all mediums are Spiritualists and the term Spiritualist is not a synonym for medium or psychic.

I would never claim to speak for all mediums or Spiritualists. That is simply my background which, is colored by my own experiences. Whenever possible, I believe it’s important to recognize and acknowledge where there are differences and give credit where it is due.

Additionally, there are those who have natural mediumship ability but do not connect it with a spiritual practice.  They just happen to be hard-wired appropriately to do so. They may be excellent antennas but not in a place spiritually, mentally, or emotionally to do the work.

My thoughts are that anyone who believes the practice of mediumship to be a burden should not be practicing. Likewise, anyone who looks at mediumship as just a source of income is taking the sacredness out of the work.

When looking to book a mediumship appointment I strongly suggest looking if you feel an energetic connection. It’s important to have chemistry with your medium and an understanding of their ethics, background, and specialty.
